Be strong and courageous

Be strong and courageous

I hate flying.
The morning before a flight I can’t eat, and my my whole body is a bit shaky and anxious from take-off to landing.
I have a ritual before every flight… it goes like this:

1. As I walk into the aircraft, I touch the airplane door and whisper, “Lord, bless it.” (I’m not kidding. I do that.)
2. During take-off I sing a little song under my breath that goes, “Jesus Savior, pilot me.” I repeat this over and over until we are at a cruising altitude.
3. If I experience ANY turbulence at all, I mentally pretend that I am flying the plane. Any bump or drop then becomes my fault, not someone else’s. It makes me feel like I’m in control.

In or out of control

Key word there, control. When facing fears, whether it be flying, starting a new job, maintaining a relationship, parenting, having a baby, we all feel a bit better when we feel in control of the situation. Do you agree with me? Have you ever been in a terrifying moment and once you were the one in control of the outcome, good or bad, it felt easier to handle?
Something in our nature wants to have control over the steering wheel of our lives. We want to dictate where we are going and what happened to us. It’s scary to let go, to be the one just a long for the ride, out of control.

With Him we are courageous

And what about when it comes to Jesus? In Joshua 1:9 He says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

God never asks us to do something that He knows we cannot do.

When facing fears and unbearable circumstances, Jesus asks us to be two things, BE strong and courageous. Then He says to not be afraid or discouraged, because He is with us always. God never asks us to do something that He knows we cannot do. He commands us to be strong and courageous because He knows that with Him we can be. We don’t have to hold the steering wheel of our lives with all of our might. We can trust in our Gods character, give Him the wheel, give Him the control that we hold on to so tightly.

God is with you

And He even takes it a step further. We don’t just give Him our fears, we can also take a deep breath after and chill out. There’s no need to stress and worry and panic as we give Him our troubles. We can give Him the control and live in peace and rest knowing that God is with us.

You are Bold,
You are Brave,
And you are Courageous,
Because your God is with you wherever you go.
